Thanks for visiting my website!
My paintings are primarily abstract, sometimes completely non-objective, sometimes affording glimpses of remembered objects and places. They are complex and detailed, featuring texture, line and shape. I work with acrylic paint, sometimes incorporating other media, such as collage, ink, pencil and pastel. I work mainly on canvas and wood panels, sometimes on paper. I especially love how I can scratch, scrape and sand back the surface of a painting on wood, building a history, a backstory for each painting.
Painting enables me to access and to express a part of myself that feels inaccessible and inexpressible through other means of communication. I aim for my paintings to achieve a balance between complexity and simplicity, focussing on creating complex textures and colours, overlaid with simple shapes and lines. I think my work reflects the relationship between my inner world and my outer world and expresses how I am feeling at the time of creating it. While the titles of my paintings give clues as to what I’m trying to ‘say’, I’m happy to leave interpretation to others.
I work intuitively, generally beginning with no plan or intention in mind, other than having chosen a colour palette. I like to add layer upon layer, sometimes removing as much paint as I add, until something emerges that begins to resonate with both my head and my heart.
I hope that some of my paintings resonate with you too!
